The chair stays true to neo-classical sensibilities, while sporting a rounded backrest which extends into two sloping armrests, thus taking on a wide U shape. They closely resemble a traditional French lit bateau, or boat bed, though designed for common areas rather than the bedroom. Predominantly backless, there are some Recamiers with backs along the long edge of the seat. The term itself Recamier can be applied to other loose types of furniture design.
Many people might well stare at the page blankly when I talk about chaise end sofas, so let me start by giving you a definition of exactly what a chaise end sofa is. The term is taken from the French phrase chaise lounge, which simply means a long chair. You'll have definitely seen a chaise lounge even if you haven't heard the term before.
Materials Used, during its early years of development, the lounge was made from natural materials like wood and rattan, which were often carved with stylized designs. With the modern times also came the modern materials like plastic and metal although wood is still the most popular material mainly because of its beauty, durability and versatility. Nowadays, the most popular wood materials for use in pieces of chaise lounger furniture are cedar and teak. These woods are known for their weatherproof properties as well as their excellent grain patterns.
Far from the likes of the original prototypes, the outdoor chaise lounge strays from the strict definition of what the seat should actually look like. In translation, the chaise longue simply means a long chair in French, and so applies to any number of outdoor recliners. The lines begin to blur here, as some pieces of outdoor furniture, the chaise lounge, sun lounger and recliner especially, are difficult to actually tell apart. The key parts are just the backrest and ability to lie nearly supine with legs above the ground. Aside from that, there is a definite amount of crossover that must just be accepted.
